Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument encompasses more than just the lands within its boundaries: it cannot be separated from the human communities bordering it. Generations of people have grown up with the Monument's lands as their backyard. The land has provided forage for their livestock, wild game for their tables, wood for their stoves, and rocks for their buildings. But use does not exclude love or appreciation of the land, and the people whose lives are still interwoven with the country have a special relationship and the continuation of traditional uses of the land such as hunting, fishing, grazing, and various forms of recreation.

Description: The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument was designated in 2000 by Presidential Proclaimation. The Monument is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The cliffs were named in 1869 by John Wesley Powell as he embarked on his expedition of the Grand Canyon. He said, "We leave behind us a long line of cliffs many hundred feet high, composed of orange and vermilion sandstone. I have named them Vermilion Cliffs."

The Monument consists of 293,000 acres of public lands containing deep canyons, wind swept buttes, colorful slickrock, and vast sand covered plateaus. Vegetative communities range from desert grassland to sagebrush covered valleys, pinyon pine / juniper forests and scattered stands of ponderosa pine. Califronia condors soar above the Vermilion Cliffs since their reintroduction in 1996/ Bighorn sheep frequent the canyons and water at the springs around the cliffs. The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is a harsh place with few improved roads and no services, but it is beautiful in its remoteness.

Paria Canyon offers an outstanding four day wilderness backpacking experience. The Coyote Buttes area contains scenic rock formations, photographs of which grace the covers of books and calendars world wide. Permits are required to enter Coyote Buttes and for overnight hikes in Paria Canyon.
